Hey Google, Can I Tweet in Prison?

No. No you can't. I really liked the way Rick Wilson said it in his Daily Beast article, so I'm going to borrow a quote from him: This was Trump's worst week since last week.

I described this as a five-alarm dumpster fire the other day on Twitter, but I'm not even sure that suffices anymore. There's certainly never been a presidency in my lifetime in which the incumbent party begins planning to run against their party's president less than a year into his first-term. Granted, it's likely that this term is going to end before Christmas of this year, so we can chalk it up to political astuteness on their part.

I've said it before, I'll say it again: In no universe was this a good week for the Trump administration. When Chris Christie is on CNN telling people that your son is a moron (not in those words, but it happened.) it's not looking good. Another big pivot for Christie was the notable lack of any comments about this being a witch-hunt or a hoax, making him the latest prominent (kinda?) Republican to praise Mueller and encourage Trump to let the investigation play out as it may. The Christie shift from 'there was absolutely no collusion' to 'I think President Trump will be vindicated in the end' is also noticeable; politicians don't jump ship all at once, it starts subtly. Politicians hate it when you parse their words, but if they wouldn't speak in nuance, we wouldn't have to.

It's really interesting to look at how far we've come in 8 months.

- No Contact with Russia. No deals in Russia.
- Ok, there was contact, but not after the campaign.
- They don't work with us anymore. They (the campaign manager) had a limited role.
- Ok, well maybe we had some contact...
- Ok, well.. there was this meeting.. you know, with Trump's son, two campaign officials and a Russian government cutout. Only those people.
- Ok, two more people.
- Wait, one more person.
- Nothing came of it. It was about adoptions.
- Here's this highly-incriminating email-chain that proves that there was absolutely nothing to do with adoptions. For your convenience, it also proves my willingness to commit treason and knowledge that it was being offered on behalf of the Russian government.
- POTUS didn't know.
- POTUS dictated the statement.

Closely mirrored by the Fox News / Sean Hannity Coverage:

- HOAX
- But her emails
- This is a witch-hunt
- Deep state
- Why didn't Obama do anything?
- Uranium
- Collusion isn't illegal
- If he was guilty, who would even care?

Have whiplash yet? Welcome to the club. There have been no less than 18 previously undisclosed contacts with Russia on the part of the Trump administration / campaign. Jared Kushner has amended his SF-86 three-hundred-and-four (hyperbole) times. We've had at least two people associated with the campaign retroactively register as foreign agents, and I expect one more to come soon (hint). We know that the special counsel just shock-and-awe'd Trump's red line and is now investigating him, his family, his businesses, his finances, and his tenant list at Trump Tower. We know that subpoenas have been issued in respect to Michael Flynn's work on behalf of the Turkish government and his ties to Cambridge Analytica. It's amazing how that company and its controversial data program keeps coming up.

Michael Flynn, the guy who carried the basket full of Trump's dirty laundry, is now the subject of two investigations that have convened Grand Juries, three congressional investigations and the recipient of no fewer than four subpoenas. Nothing to see here, right?

Even bigger news than all of that is the revelation that the special counsel is reviewing financial information NOT related to the election. Trump's casinos have long been suspected of being fronts for Russian money laundering, as evidenced by the fact that they NEVER. MAKE. MONEY. Why is this bigger? Look at it this way: Comey opened the counter-intelligence investigation a year ago. Think of all the information that they've gathered in a year. Mueller could have easily taken over, looked at the information, decided there was nothing there, and closed the case. What did he do? He expanded the probe at least three times and convened a grand jury.

You can call this a fishing expedition if you want, but Mueller is about to get a -big- bite.

  2. Thank you so much for this blog. I look forward to every post.

You've touched on leaking in past posts, but I'd be very interested in your expanded view on how it's seen from the inside.

I'm definitely not asking for details that would help plug the leaks since that's not in our best interest. Despite what they claim it hardly seems like national security is more at risk from leaks than it is from folks in the White House who should never have received security clearances in the first place. Or, oh yeah, that Russian hacking thing.

Thanks again for the valuable insights.
